Two compressor settings may share a threshold and ratio yet sound different because they respond over time in different ways. Attack and release are useful places to begin that comparison.
Locate the two transitions
The Audacity compressor manual describes attack as the gradual application of compression after the level exceeds the threshold, and release as the gradual removal after it falls below. Other settings, including lookahead, affect the result too.
Use a copy of a short practice recording with clear speech and pauses. Change one timing control at a time, leaving the rest documented. Listen at a comfortable level.
Describe the result before choosing a preset
Notice whether the beginnings of words feel different or whether the level takes time to recover between phrases. Avoid selecting a universal number simply because another recording sounded good with it.
Compare the processed passage with the original at reasonably matched listening levels. A louder preview can be persuasive without solving the problem you intended to address. Keep the setting only if it helps this recording, and write down the audible change rather than describing the effect as automatically professional.
